Spotlight Athlete- Amanda Wells

What brought you to CrossFit Zachary in the first place? My mom passed away from breast cancer at the age of 59 in 2020. Since then, I have been trying to improve my health and decrease my chances of going through the same thing. The first thing I worked on was my diet. And now I am focusing on fitness. I wanted something challenging to make the best use of my time, and I needed a coach because I had zero experience in the gym. So based on what little I knew of CrossFit, it seemed like a good fit.

What was your first impression? How has that changed? Gabby is the first coach I met, and she made me feel at home from the very first day. All the coaches have shown a genuine concern for teaching and helping me improve. It was nice to see that the gym was full of regular people, each at their own level, pushing to get better. The only thing that has changed is that at first, the time spent at the gym felt like a luxury and made me feel a little guilty for taking time away from my home, but now I see it as an investment in my future self. I am an active person and want to be able to stay that way.

What was your first “bright spot”, (PR)? I still have a lot of those to get to, but it did feel good learning my first squat clean!

What are you working on now? Double unders… and everything else. I love that I will always be chasing PR’s and the competitive nature of CrossFit.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Zachary memory? Seeing my 6-year-old daughter imitate me at the gym. I want to set an example for her. Show her that we can do hard things and that challenges can be fun. Teach her to be grateful for our health and bodies and to always take the time to take care of ourselves.
